Everybody could use a little compassion, especially when it comes to end-of-life care. Hospice of The Valley has been providing exactly that for the past 40 years, and Grayhawk is happy to say that for nearly half of that time, it has served as the home course for the Hospice of The Valley Pro-Am presented by Cigna Healthcare. This year the fundraising golf tournament teed off on April 13 with veteran tournament chairman, Jay Hoselton, at the helm. “This is my 19th year doing this tournament,” said Hoselton.
“It’s been great, and for such a great cause, too, because of what Hospice does for the families – it’s just incredible.”

Racking it up for a Great Cause
In its history, the tournament has raised a grand total of $781,000 and $32,791 this year alone. It would no doubt be successful as a simple charity event, but they upped the ante by getting local professionals involved to play for a share of a $10,000 purse. This year, Marty Jertson edged out RW Eaks in a sudden-death playoff that went two holes. Both shot a 4-under-par 68. On the amateur side, the team from Risas Dental and Braces and professional, Ben Weir, took top honors.
Cigna’s Support
Cigna Healthcare of Arizona has been a longtime sponsor of the event, and according to Liz Roth, their reasons for participating are crystal clear. “We see what Hospice of The Valley does here in the Phoenix area,” she said. “And we can see their compassion in their care every day. We can’t help but not want to sponsor this wonderful event, and we are thankful for everything that Hospice does.”
Come a Long Way
From its humble beginnings in a rent-free space at the Maricopa County health department, Hospice of The Valley now cares for 3,000 patients a day with the comfort and dignity they deserve. It’s stable of two volunteer nurses in 1977 grew into a robust team of doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, volunteers and bereavement counselors who now offer myriad services. In a society filled with me-first personalities, it’s a huge relief to know that selfless organizations such as Hospice of The Valley have your back when it matters most. On behalf of the entire Grayhawk Family, thank you for all you do.
